HILLSBOROUGH BASEBALL SUMMER TOURNAMENT TEAM INFORMATION
The Hillsborough Baseball League is committed to providing an excellent learning environment for all Hillsborough children who want to play baseball and the League sponsors spring, summer & fall recreational leagues in support of that purpose. In addition, we have an expanding off-season player development program to provide our kids and parents tools which will help our parents become better teachers and our kids better students.
The tournament team program is competitive; the 2011 selection process for ages 8U and above will begin in April. The selection process for 2012 teams, ages 10U-13U will occur this fall and all other teams will continue to be selected in the spring. Teams which form in the fall are strongly encouraged to begin team practice Mid-December or early-January. Please note that facility expenses will be the responsibility of the parent with the team managers guiding this process.
Who’s eligible? Players who participate in the Spring Recreational League are welcome to enter the selection process. In order to participant in the summer tournament program, each player is required to participant in at least 50% of their regular season games.
2011 Evaluation The 2011 Tournament Team evaluation process will be a 3 prong process taking place over the course of 2 days. It will consist of an evaluation from an independent baseball instructor/coach in conjunction with an evaluation from the Tournament Team Coach as well as final review by the Tournament Team Committee.
Players should plan to participant in both evaluation dates. If a player cannot make both dates, they should contact their age level coordinator as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that the second day of evaluation will be used to refine the evaluator’s skills assessment. Not making both days may be detrimental to a player’s chance of making a team.
Team Formation At most levels, Hillsborough Baseball League will form 2 tournament teams. Wherever possible, the league will form more. At the 8U level, teams will be split via draft into equal teams. Teams 9U and above will be split using a different set of metrics. Teams will be grouped using the player skill assessment from the evaluation period.
Tournament teams are formed for the purpose of competitive play. Our managers understand that we are still in the business of youth baseball development and to the best of their ability should provide our kids opportunities to improve their skills. With that in mind, playing time & position is at the full discretion of the manager and we ask that you have a conversation with your player as to what this means and what could happen prior to joining a tournament team.
If you feel your player requires more development over the summer, we encourage you to consider our summer baseball program as an alternative to the summer tournament teams.
The Commitment: Tournament team participation requires a significant commitment during the summer. For families who plan on vacationing during that time, we ask that you speak with the tournament team director prior to entering the selection process to ensure this is right for your family. Being selected to a team and then being unavailable for extended number of games will severely impact your eligibility review the follow year. Please understand we do this to be fair to some other family that may have been available to commit.
League Fees: Tournament team fees are at the expense of the parents/guardians and will range anywhere from $250 - $300 in 2011. Next year, please expect the fees to increase as 10U and above teams will form in the fall allowing those teams to schedule indoor Winter Practice as well as additional tournaments. Teams which form in the fall may also be asked by their managers to participant in an out of state tournament.
