Sunday Sandlot Program – 8U Player Development Supplemental Program

Sunday Sandlot Development Program Propose: This program will be geared to the development of 8U players in the HBL in order to prepare them for more competitive baseball as they learn key baseball fundamentals needed for future baseball experiences.

Guiding Principle: The Sunday Sandlot Program has evolved in order to improve player development at the 8U level. It will be beneficial for players at this age group to have a program, which allows players to build on previous game experiences while coaches and league officials provide a safe environment to foster player growth. By meeting weekly, throughout April and early May each spring the 8U HBL players within the HBL organization will have a chance to work on critical baseball fundamentals in a controlled environment which will focus on the enhancement of their level of play and put emphasis on skills the players need to develop and contribute to their teams as they deepen their baseball acumen

Dates: 4/13, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18
Start Time: 8:30 am to 10:30 am
Location: Valley Road @ Ditmars

Program Details / Assumptions:

  • All rules that govern the HBL will similarly govern the Sunday Morning Sandlot Games as it is an extension of the league and is in accordance with all league guidelines
  • The HBL will provide an accredited league sanctioned umpire who will be an unbiased participant and treat the Sunday Sandlot games as a development game so the players can learn to function as a team and collaborate with other players at the same age group.
  • There will be no additional cost to the 8U players involved in the Sunday Sandlot program as this will be an extension of the Recreation Baseball Season and will be supported by fields already used by the league. No new uniforms, shirts, hats or other equipment will be needed to play.
  • It is NOT mandatory to attend the Sunday Sandlot Program to be considered for the 8U Travel Team, the 8U Travel team will be developed off of separate and distinct criteria, but the growth and development gained during these games will be an added benefit of playing games before players are evaluated and the travel teams are decided
  • The program will be an all-inclusive program for any player at the 8U level who is registered with the HBL at the time the Sunday Sandlot Program starts. This league will cater to is the player that is looking to work on skills which will prepare them for future play in the HBL, possible travel leagues and beyond.
  • The teams will be picked at random each week based on the number of players present at the time the game should start. Additional players will be added so the teams are matched fairly and provide no competitive edge to any of the teams on the field.
  • There is no set number of players needed to play a game, 9 players will not be required per side in order for the 8U players to have a game. It is perfectly adequate to have 6 on 6. If there are more than 2 teams the teams will be rotated in and out of play by innings and equal play time.
  • If there are too many players to field two teams and a third team is required extra players will have the time to work in open space in the outfield where hitting, fielding, pitching and catching can be worked on. They will be rotated in the game on a regular basis
  • Parents and 8U players will be able to watch and learn if they do not want to participate in order to measure their child’s level of skillset or to partake in the program, the program is meant for any child, but is not mandatory to attend and /or play
  • The Sunday morning program will continue business as usual, but the 8U coaches and players will use the majority (75%) of the session each week to play developmental sandlot games and work on skills they have been coached on. The first quarter of the session each week will consist of instruction and the remaining three quarters will consist of developmental game situations.

Sunday Sandlot Governance / Coaches:

  • A league board member or official will oversee the program and a league representative should be present at the games each week. Any board member can hold this position and all board members can rotate as the player Sandlot Liaison. This will provide a level of governance to ensure inclusion and proper gamesmanship is followed.
  • Any coach or assistant coach in good standing within the HBL will be allowed to help in player development and provide feedback to 8U players while they are on the field during the Sunday games, the more involved the better!
  • Each year it will be the responsibility of the HBL board member who owns the Sunday Sandlot Program to seek and transition the program to another board member or to find parents from the previous age group to run and cultivate the program in the up coming year

Field Use / Scheduling:

  • Field use will be determined and marked on the HBL calendar as being used by the 8U Sunday Sandlot Development Program. Valley Road – Ditmars field will be the most adequate field to be scheduled for the 8U Sunday Sandlot Program.
  • Sunday Sandlot games will not be rescheduled due to inclement weather
  • The field will be made available and scheduled at least 5 days in advance to prepare parents and interested coaches for the game. The organization of a filed and a set time should be established so parents and players can settle into a baseball routine early in the season
  • Umpires will be provided and scheduled by the league. This will also provide an opportunity for younger umpires to get practice in game situations.

Equipment Needs:

  • Players will be expected to supply their own equipment including but not limited to: uniforms, bats, gloves, helmets and cleats.
  • Coaches and equipment will be needed for the games and we will look for volunteers to ensure we have catchers gear and bases for the games

Key Considerations for Growth

  • If more than two teams are present for a number of weekends the program may require a facility with 2 fields.
